A Day in the Life of an Online Student
Ever wondered what it's like to be an online student? Well, everyone's experience is totally different – that's what makes getting an education online so great. For Cindy Cornwell of Jerseyville, IL, being able to go to school online has been a blessing.
Gearing up to finish her spring semester in the Medical Assistant – Administrative Track program at Daymar College – Online, Cindy says, "I love it. I do the online classes and I love it. I love it dearly. You can't get me out of my homework. The Medical Assistant – Administrative Track is a 2-year program, where I'm enrolled in 3 classes a semester. The first 2 are whole semester, and the last is 6 weeks. That one's a little tough, but I like the challenge."
Being able to take classes from her home is an important factor in Cindy's education because of her other responsibilities. She says, "I just love the flexibility. My husband is disabled and he has to have somebody with him at all times. And I still further my education while I'm at home taking care of him and my mother. It's just great because I can do it at my time, my pace, and it's a whole lot easier. It gives me time to concentrate on keeping my grades where they should be, getting all my work in, things like that, instead of making time to get to and from classes."
With all those extra responsibilities, what was it that finally made Cindy decide that going back to school was necessary? "It was something that kind of came out of the blue,” she says. “I lost my father in December of last year and I told my husband, 'life's too short, and if you don't have a career, you won't ever get anywhere'. With my husband being sick and everything, if something were to happen to him, I would need to have something. That's why I decided to go back.
“I am so glad that I found Daymar College Online and enrolled. I went through one other college online and I did not care for them. This school here, I just adore it."
Even though Cindy takes classes from home, she still feels connected to Daymar College and receives more help and support than she ever thought possible: "The staff is just wonderful. Especially Sarah, Stephanie, Jackie … They are so great. I call and I talk to the staff. Sarah, I talk to her 3-4 times a week. She's even helped me when I've gotten kinda bummed, and I talk to her and I feel fine! I'm cheerful and back in my studies and it's a real stress reliever. My mother's just been in the hospital for heart troubles, and they worked with me on my schooling to make sure I kept my grades up and got my classes done, and helped out wherever. And they're just concerned about you as a person and it's not just a number to them. They actually care about you, sincerely."
Overall, the decision to enroll in Daymar College – Online has been a positive one for Cindy's family, life and self-esteem. She says, "Some of these classes have changed me in more ways than I ever thought. I look at myself differently than I did before."
